Profile

Wayne was born in Porirua in 1974  and now lives with his young family in Amberley, North Canterbury. He has attracted considerable critical acclaim as a pre-eminent Maori artist and has been critically described as ‘a cultural prankster.’ He was the Rita Angus artist in residence in 2010 and has a dynamic and prolific art practice – with his bicultural heritage reflected in the diversity of his works.

Wellesley’s longstanding art teacher Eve Owen was honoured that someone of Wayne’s artistic vitality and calibre allowed the boys to experience and interact with him up close.

“Wayne was extraordinarily generous with his time here and was a born teacher,” Eve said.

Others in the community also had the opportunity to see Wayne at work, in an Open Studio.

Wayne’s residency works will be exhibited from 21 September 7:00pm and thereafter until 23 September in the Artroom at Wellesley College. Partial proceeds of the sales go towards supporting a scholarship to the school.
