Art is a key part of the Wellesley curriculum. The school boasts a large, airy art studio and this, coupled with the stunning location between the bush and the sea, creates a great physical environment in which creativity can be nurtured. Glen Jorna -the Head of Arts-and a practicing artist himself, welcomes a collaboration with the resident artist in his lessons with the boys. Moreover, the artist residency allows the boys to experience and work alongside an artist throughout their creative process. This has provided yet another dimension to the boys’ art experience at Wellesley.

The residency is for a four week period, with the artist being paid a weekly stipend and for all the art materials used during the residency. During his time at Wellesley, Richard will hold Open Studio workshops.

As part of the residency, the artist is encouraged to produce artworks for exhibition. The artists’ work will be available for sale at the exhibition and a percentage will go to the Wellesley College Foundation in support of Promising futures for boys. For more information on this Campaign or to donate please click on Promising Futures link below.

The ARTBOURNE residency and student exhibition is on Thursday September 14th from 7.00-8.00pm and all art appreciators, Friends of Wellesley and fans of Richards work are warmly invited. The first three resident artists have been painters and sculptors, – Wayne Youle 2010, Ben Timmins 2013 and Sam Duckor-Jones 2015, and all exhibitors in the main ARTBOURNE exhibition previously. We are delighted to announce that multi-talented artist/musician Richard Adams will be the 2017 Artist in Residence.

Richard lives in Auckland with his wife and teenage son where he paints, as well as plays violin with his jazz group the Nairobi Trio. Richard has been fortunate to have been a resident artist previously, most recently in 2016 for Winchester College – a prestigious English school steeped in history. “I paint when I’m not playing the jazz violin. The two go hand in hand. One sets the other on fire. When I feel good about my playing at night, the next day in my studio the painting always goes well. Painting should improve as the artist matures, just as in jazz the more you play, the more you understand the value of improvisation and a greater sense of confidence can emerge. This allows the artist to make a direct statement from within. With jazz less can be more, as in painting five strokes can say as much as five thousand.

I consider myself an abstract painter. I draw my inspiration from nature, from colours, textures, shapes, surfaces and remembering these, I can later produce them with feeling on canvas. I like my work to have a certain amount of spontaneity to it. This helps me in feeling that I am the guide of the brush rather than the master. I try not to have a pre-conception of what the picture will look like, I’ll pick a certain size of canvas, deal with the necessary materials and then let an image grow from this. Of course this also applies in playing jazz improvisation. It helps to allow the feeling of notes you imagine to pass through you rather than trying to arrange them for the listener. In that way, they can play themselves and the painting can really paint itself.” Richard is excited about working with the boys and Head of Arts Glen Jorna from 21st August 2017 when he starts his residency. Richard is represented in Wellington by Solander Gallery, Willis Street.

We hope that the Artist in Residence programme shows the boys that unlocking and deepening their creativity may lead to a lifelong love of and possibly a career in arts. Moreover, artists like Richard make a living out of their art, along with the support of dealer galleries. As part of the school’s community engagement, Richard will host two Open Studio evenings during his residency.
